Extending the Reach of Professional Education
The Client
The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) supports more than 14,000 physicians and patients within the province by advancing patient-centred care and supporting physicians’ wellness. The Accelerating Change Transformation Team (ACTT) is a branch of the AMA that focuses on quality improvement and system transformation for Alberta medical practices.
The Opportunity
It had always been a dream for ACTT to create a digital education platform to provide comprehensive, accredited education to Alberta’s medical community. When the opportunity presented itself, it was clear that successfully developing a Learning Management System (LMS) would take a diverse team and expertise in communicating with various audiences. Formidable was first on the ground to help the organization develop a functional LMS that was easy to use for busy medical professionals and offered vetted, engaging content.
Making it Formidable
Formidable began with assisting the platform's development and ensuring user experience was top-of-mind while creating user management procedures and enrolment processes. From there, the team was tasked with branding the platform, developing standards for all courses, resources, gamification and discussion board usage.
For three years, Formidable worked with various subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop over 60 courses. The work involved developing wireframes, creating learning objectives, crafting scripts, liaising with voice actors and videographers, sourcing imagery, and managing all testing and quality assurance.
Learning how your target audience will use your platform and resources is the secret sauce to engagement. Formidable engaged a comprehensive approach that would ensure the education materials met the needs of all learners, paying close attention to:
Understanding learners’ varied backgrounds
Recognizing differences in educational and cultural contexts
Incorporating adult learning best practices such as self-directed learning, real-world applicability, and problem-centered approaches
Reaching diverse learning styles (kinesthetic, linguistic, auditory, visual and logical)
Incorporating hands-on activities with clearly written and spoken explanations, audio materials, visuals and logical structures
Infusing fun elements like gamification and interactive activities
After the courses were published, the team switched focus to developing integrated marketing strategies and materials for the curriculums, including:
Newsletters
Social media content
Stakeholder collateral
Promotional events
As a final deliverable, group and one-on-one training with the organization was recorded and documented for longevity.
